Doing E-Portfolios Right

Composition instructors have long been in the forefront of the idea of using portfolios to assess student learning. There are many forms of portfolios, but the basic idea is to have students assemble a body of work over the course of a semester — and to have more emphasis on student progression over a semester than on any one paper.

IT DIRECTORS and other top-level executives in higher education attending the Syllabus2005 Executive Summit in July were surveyed on a range of IT topics in a study arranged by Campus Technology Magazine (www.campus-technology.com). Four broad areas emerged from this study:

State Community Colleges Facing New Requirements

HARRISBURG - As Pennsylvania's 14 community colleges receive the largest infusion of state money in more than a decade, their performance is coming under greater government scrutiny.

Starting in 2006, the two-year schools will be required to provide the state Education Department with student retention and graduation rates, as well as data on job placements and employer satisfaction.

"We're going to set some high expectations for community colleges... . We'll also be thinking about the comparable level of support that the government needs to provide," Zahorchak said. "All of that has to be measurable if we're going to talk to the public about the value of community colleges."
