The University of Ottawa Selects iWebfolio for Pilot Program to Support Vision 2010 Strategic Plan
Program to Demonstrate Evidence of Progressive Learning and Competency

PITTSBURGH, PA, December 13, 2006 Nuventive, a leading provider of individual and institutional assessment solutions, today announced that the University of Ottawa, North America’s largest bilingual university with over 33,000 students, has initiated a pilot project to evaluate iWebfolio, a leading electronic portfolio management system for managing the process of individual and institutional assessment and continuous improvement, for participation in the ePortfolio project, an element of its Vision 2010 Academic Strategic Plan.

Located in the heart of Canada’s capital city, the University of Ottawa has a rich, successful tradition of preparing students for rewarding and stimulating careers for more than 150 years. As North America’s largest bilingual university, the University of Ottawa’s multicultural environment provides the opportunity to study in English, French or both. Students choose from a comprehensive offering of more than 230 undergraduate and 100 graduate and doctorate programs. The University of Ottawa has also been named as one of Canada’s top five research-intensive universities for 2006.

Vision 2010 represents the initial results of a comprehensive strategic planning exercise that began at the University in 2004 with an extensive internal consultation involving the entire university community comprised of students, support staff, professors and administrative staff. In 2005, the University Senate adopted the vision, mission, values, directions and goals.

The University of Ottawa recognizes that in order to evaluate progress toward key goals and objectives, the institution must have an effective process for collecting and presenting empirical data. This process must provide a comprehensive structure engaging programs, departments and other units who are charged with meeting and exceeding internal assessment and external accrediting goals.

A key component of the Vision 2010 program is the university’s decision to evaluate and implement the use of an institution-wide electronic portfolio to demonstrate evidence of progress toward key goals and objectives across the university, as well as at the program and department level. The University of Ottawa chose to pilot iWebfolio from Nuventive to demonstrate how evidence of progressive learning and competency will be documented by building and managing a structured repository of artifacts. This evidence can be used dynamically to determine the extent to which desired competencies are attained over the course of the program. The university evaluation will identify the best solution based on educational, technical, institutional, and career criteria.

iWebfolio enables users to share documentation of activities and achievements, educational, professional and personal goals, and reflections on the learning experience with faculty, peers, mentors, potential employers and professional organizations. Using the innovative Shared Templates and Measures LibrarySM, faculty and staff at the university will be able to develop and share templates and guidelines that will enable the proliferation of best practices.

During the pilot project, the iWebfolio solution will be evaluated in the School of Rehabilitation. Students in the rehabilitation program must meet a national accreditation requirement. Participants in the electronic portfolio project will prepare a professional portfolio that will illustrate the student’s competencies and present evidence of the desired learning outcomes.

“Forward thinking institutions around the world like the University of Ottawa are adopting new approaches to ensure continuous improvement at every level of the organization,” said Dr. David Raney, Nuventive CEO. “In today’s highly competitive educational environment, it is critical that leaders throughout the institution focus on achieving their goals and objectives and that these individuals know what progress is being made and where there is room for improvement. We are very pleased that iWebfolio was selected by the University of Ottawa for participation in its Vision 2010 ePortfolio project and look forward to partnering with the university in this important endeavour.”
